Knitting and Spinning Classes

I teach classes privately and at my local yarn store, The Crooked Stitch Spins and Knits.  You can sign up for the classes that interest you below.  (Private Classes are at the bottom of the page!) And sign up here to be on the email list for when new classes are announced.

CROOKED STITCH CLASSES

Crooked Stitch classes are held at The Crooked Stitch, Spins and Knits, 390 Franklin Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia, 24151

Beginning Drop Spindle Classescrooked-stitch-spindle

Learn how to create your own yarn with the timeless skill of drop spinning. In this introduction to drop spinning you will learn how to choose a fiber to spin, how to draft and apply appropriate twist, how to ply, and how to finish your yarn. Easy to learn and with practice can be a very meditative and peaceful pastime.  Adult learners only.  Must register by filling out form below or calling The Crooked Stitch at (540) 420-1289. Class is held noon to 2:00 pm.

Cost: $50.00 (Drop Spindle and fiber included)

KNITTING CLASSES

LEARN TO KNIT CLASS

Beginning KnittingNO experience necessary.  Learn the only two stitches you need to make any knitted project – knit and purl.  By the end of class you will have the skills you need to create a simple dish cloth.  By the time you finish your dishcloth you will have the skills necessary to take on the wide and wonderful world of knitting.  Two free patterns included with the class as well as take home reminders and step by step images of how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off.  Generally takes two hours.


 KNITTING – STEP TWO

KnittingMust have taken the Learn to Knit Class.

Brush up on you knitting and purling, as well as learn the next steps in knitting.  Learn to increase and decrease , pointers on reading a patterns, and learn a few of the basic stitch patterns used in most knitted projects: including ribbing, moss stitch, simple cables and lace basics.  Generally takes two hours.


SOCK KNITTING CLASSES

Knitting SocksMust be confident with knitting and purling.

Sh! Don’t tell anyone, but socks are EASY!  In 3 easy classes you will learn everything you need to know to create a knitted sock.  Class includes basic pattern reading skills; as well as a basic sock pattern personalized for your foot or the foot of a loved one!  Students must have a solid working knowledge of knitting, and be comfortable with how to knit, purl, increase, and decrease.  Generally takes up to 6 hours.


BASIC SWEATERS CLASSES 

Knitting a sweaterIntermediate level classmust be proficient in knit, purl, increase and decrease.

Learn the basics of Sweater construction.  We will discuss choosing a sweater pattern, sleeve styles, neck styles, yarn choices, piece knitting,knitting in the round, button holes, picking up stitches, finishing, blocking and much more.  This class is a great basic introduction to the overall skill of knitting a sweater; as well as a great way to build your sweater toolkit.  Must have a solid working knowledge of knitting, and be comfortable with how to knit, purl, increase, and decrease. Generally takes up to 6 hours.


SHAWL CLASS 

Knitting a shawlIntermediate level classmust be proficient in knit, purl, increase and decrease.

Lean to knit a simple shawl in class.  We will talk about shawl types, making edgings, creating lace, finishing, blocking, and wearing your creations.  This class is a great basic introduction to shawl knitting; as well as a great way to build your shawl toolkit.  The Aeslight Shawl gives you three different ways to practice your shawl skills and is lovely to wear!  Must have a solid working knowledge of knitting, and be comfortable with how to knit, purl, increase, and decrease. Generally takes up to 3 hours.


DESIGN YOUR OWN KNITTING CLASS

Maybe you have a project you want to start, but you need a little help to get going?  Have you made mistakes you don’t know how to solve and need a helping hand? I am here and happy to help!  I love knitting, and love to teach knitting.  I can show you how to move forward and enjoy your knitting more!  This class is perfect for those who enjoy the structure of a class and want to refine their skills or master a specific pattern.  Most Popular Class. SPINNING CLASSES

BEGINNING DROP SPINDLE

Learn to spinLearn the ancient and timeless art of spinning on a drop spindle.  Easy to learn and so rewarding, this is a class you will enjoy and a skill you will learn to love.  Like checkers, spinning is a skill that you can learn in minutes and can take a lifetime to really master this peaceful, useful skill.  The best way to learn is with a skilled instructor at your side to lead you through each step and guide and support your efforts.  Included in the price of the class is a simple homemade spindle and an ounce of fiber. 1 hour, $25.00


 SPIN ON A WHEEL

Learn to spin on a spinning wheelMust have taken the Drop Spindle class.

If you enjoyed spinning with a drop spindle you will LOVE spinning on a wheel.  In this class you will learn the basics of: how spinning wheels work, how to spin – front draw and long draw, when and how you should ply, how to buy fiber you will love.  There is a spinning wheel that students can borrow (with a deposit) or students can use their own functioning wheels. This class can take from 3 hours to 6 hours depending on the student.
